Lust After My Nails

I love the mix between navy and gold. It’s one of my favourite colour combinations! I also love using studs and glitter together.
Lately I’ve been putting glitter on my middle finger and making that the main accent nail because…. I BROKE A NAIL. i refuse to take a picture of it because it just makes me too sad. Somehow I broke my nail below the actual tip so I would’ve had to wait til it grew out in order for it to break. I wasn’t willing to wait, so I buffed out the break (saw a small bruise formed) and filed my nail so that now the shape is SUPER curved. Glitter nail polish creates a protective layer and makes your nails harder and stronger. Right now it is enabling growth and protecting my nail from breaking further.
It was a painful break but I fixed it enough that you wouldn’t notice unless I point it out. #longnailproblems
Anyways, since I’ve filed down my nails in order to keep them relatively the same length, I thought I would step up my design game since I’ve been playing it safe lately.
Everything I used is available at most drug stores (my personal favourite: REXALL) and doesn’t cost a zillion dollars. (with the exception of my american apparel glitter)
What I Used:
- Urban (Navy) by Revlon
- Coin Flip (Gold Base) by Sally Hansen
- Meteor Shower (Glitter) by American Apparel
- Complete Care Nail Treatment (helps grow, strengthen and moisturize nails) by Sally Hansen
- I Heart Nail Art Kit: Studs by Sally Hansen
-Insta Dry Top Coat by Sally Hansen
- Glass Nail Flie (or you can use a ceramic one)
- Sephora 4-in-1 Nail Buffer

For the past few weeks, I have kept my nail designs relatively simple. why?

As a business student, I have to make a professional impression on perspective employers… crazy dots and lines might be a little much when you first meet me. However, I let my personality shine through just a little bit with brighter pastel colours and some fabulous glitter!

*Tip: if you are as nail obsessed as I am (love bright colours, and designs on designs), but are going on a job interview or a profession meet and greet, keep your nails clean and simple. Do an accent nail, you can do glitter, rhinestones, dots, etc. Just make sure they are as professional as you are and make the right statement about you. Who says profession means boring ?!

New Year means exciting new things !

First of all, let me start off by saying I’M SORRY.  I am the worst blogger… I took some time away from my beloved blog to get into the swing of things for school. Since I am graduating this semester, I’ve been getting myself ready by working on my resume and linkedin and attending networking events inorder to hopefully land a great job after grad. This leaves me with no time for my nails (its the worst). However, after this coming week I will fill you in on something really exciting…… STAY TUNED !

these are what i call “exam nails”… i did these within the last 2 weeks while “studying” for finals :)

I’ve been trying to be more creative with my nail designs. Since school has kept me super busy, I decided to keep the design relatively simple but really fun at the same time !

Dots

That’s right guys, I did the dots myself with a dotting tool I bought from Topshop! I was a little shaky at first but with a little practice, I was able to get the dots in the right place. I made practice dots on a plastic cd cover I was using as my palette. I think dots are the easiest and cutest nail design! You can use so many different colour combinations and you can create any design you want… i chose the basic dotting design to save on time.

How long does this last ?

The first picture was taken November 16th (right after I did them) and the second picture was taken today, November 28th. It’s been about 12 days now and my nails are still intact! growing out just a bit but that’s it.

I’ve washed dishes, showered, worked, typed and no chips !

I came up with this design based on the colours, I knew I wanted to used reds, glitters, studs and black/white. Once I had my colours picked, the hard part was over and I was ready to design!

Polishes Used

Pinky: Gold Flash by American Apparel, Twinkle Toes-ty by Sally Hansen: Complete Salon Manicure

I used a new top coat, Seche Vite: Dry Fast Top Coat

I still love Insta Dry by Sally Hansen but if I’m doing nail designs Seche Vite won’t drag or smudge the design and it still leaves the gel finish I like !

Enjoy !!!

Fade Effect
I decided to try something new!
For this effect you need:
- a small sponge
- pastel nail polishes (chose 3 or 4)
- white nail polish
- q-tips
- plastic plate or old cd case cover
Step one: apply your base coat and wait approx. 5 minutes
Step two: apply 2 coats of white nail polish. this will make your light colours stand out! allow the polish to dry for about 10 minutes
Step three: after nails have dried, pour a small amount of the first colour you want to use on the plastic plate (I chose to do the light orange colour first)
Step four: carefully dip your sponge into the nail polish. dap excess polish on the side of the plate. then sponge your colour over 1/3 of your nail.
Step five: repeat step 3 and 4 until you’ve used all the colours you’ve picked. (note: save your darker colours for last). allow for the nails to dry for approx. 10 minutes.
Step six: once your nails have dried, apply your top coat. this will blend the colours together, creating the fade effect!
Step seven: clean up the area around your nails with nail polish remover (or pure acetone) and q-tips. remember to use a cuticle oil after to prevent dry skin ! (I use coconut oil but you can use whatever you like)
you can also wait for your nails to dry completely and apply a glitter top coat to really make your nails stand out :)

Sorry about the delay !
It took awhile for me to get the perfect colours for a monochromatic look, but I finally got them right :)
I chose to do green on my left hand and blue on my right. I didn’t want to do both hand the same colour motif, I thought to myself.. what could make my nails stand out without being TOO outrageous?

Monochromatic Colours: all the colours (tints, tones and shades) of a single hue.

This is a great technique to play around with colour, I’ve personally have gotten so many lovely compliments, I think I’ll keep them this way for a little while longer.

Added a rhinestone for flare !

Hey guys! So school has taken a toll on my social life (and by that I mean my free time to do my nails) but lucky me, I got the weekend free ! I’ll be posting by Sunday night :)
